Behavioral Health / ABA
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and behavioral health services help individuals develop adaptive skills, manage challenging behaviors, and build social competence.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based therapy that uses principles of learning to increase helpful behaviors and reduce behaviors that interfere with learning or daily life. ABA is widely used for individuals with autism spectrum disorder but can benefit anyone with behavioral challenges or skill deficits. Therapy is individualized and data-driven, with specific goals tailored to each person.
ABA services can range from intensive programs (20-40 hours per week for young children) to focused interventions targeting specific skills like social interaction, communication, self-care, or academic readiness. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) develops the treatment plan and supervises Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) who deliver the direct therapy. Sessions can occur in homes, clinics, schools, or community settings.
In California, health insurance plans (including Medi-Cal) are required to cover ABA therapy for individuals with an autism diagnosis. Regional Centers also fund behavioral services for eligible individuals. The demand for ABA services in the Bay Area often exceeds provider capacity, so waitlists are common. It is a good idea to get on multiple waitlists while you are waiting for services to begin.
Eligibility
A diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is required for insurance-funded ABA. Regional Center behavioral services are available to individuals with any qualifying developmental disability. A behavioral assessment is typically needed before services begin.
Typical Timeline
Insurance authorization takes 2-4 weeks after assessment. Waitlists for ABA providers in the Bay Area can range from 1 to 6 months. Regional Center authorization typically takes 30-60 days.
